SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Holly Caudill, believed to be the first female quadriplegic attorney in the United States, died Friday after surgery for a life-threatening infection. She was 36.

The surgery was declared a success, but her heart failed as she was being wheeled into the recovery room, a friend told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Ms. Caudill, who lobbied for legislation to help the working disabled, served since 1997 in the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego. She was assigned to the border-crime unit as a special assistant U.S. attorney.
