Karl Malone Wins 2nd NBA MVP Award

NEW YORK (AP) -- Utah's Karl Malone won his second Most Valuable Player award today, edging out two other big men, Alonzo Mourning and Tim Duncan.

Malone, who also won the award in 1996-97, received 827 points and 44 first-place votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Voting took place before the start of the playoffs.

Miami's Mourning finished second with 773 points, including 36 first-place votes, and San Antonio's Duncan was third with 740 points and 30 first-place votes.

Malone, who was second in the voting last season to the retired Michael Jordan, averaged 23.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 49 games. He ...
