Black studies program at FIU boosts interest in African culture.

Lubna Khan has always liked literature. As an English major at Florida International University, she has had the opportunity to indulge her taste. But there was a problem.

"I was getting a little tired of reading British romantic poetry and classical American literature. I yearned to read African and Caribbean and Native American and Chinese literature."

The opportunity came with the start of the African-New World Studies program.

"I jumped at the opportunity to study literature from a different culture perspective," she said.
