He was 16, neglected and mad. Since substance abuse had robbed him of his mother, he'd lived with his grandmother. But the still-young grandmother was too busy to spend much time with him.

His hurt feelings erupted in stormy fights. Then the teenagers started skipping school.

In the nick of time, Cynthia Brooks, a volunteer mediator with the Youth and Family Mediation Program, stepped in to help resolve the conflict. She encouraged the boy and his grandmother to write up a contract they could live with.
