Johnny Kelley may be the heart of the Boston Marathon but Cosmas Ndeti, the 1993, '94 and '95 winner, is its soul.

Many thought Ndeti was incapable of a third win for several reasons. "Three-peating" is extremely rare. In the 99-year history of the Boston Marathon, only Clarence De-Mar (1922-24) and Bill Rodgers of Melrose (1978-80) have done it.

Add to that the absence of Ndeti's "good luck charm," his son Gideon Boston, who was unable to join him this year due to problems securing a visa. His wife, Jane, and his two month old daughter, Serafina, also had to remain in Kenya with his son.
