Foundation endows Cpt. Riley L. Pitts Vietnam Memorial Scholarship.
Captain Riley L. Pitts - the first African-American officer in the history of the U.S. military to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor - was killed in action during the Vietnam War on Oct. 31, 1967. The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military service award for heroism during combat.
Pitts was the only Oklahoma to receive the honor during the Vietnam War.
In his memory, during the spring of 1994, the University of Oklahoma Vietnam Memorial Scholarship Association announced the creation of its Captain Riley L. Pitts Memorial Scholarship.
