If castrating men to preserve their boy-soprano voices was a thoroughly "unnatural act" in the 18th Century, the 20th Century movie account of the "castrati" is a freak of nature itself.
Somewhere between "R" and "X" in rating and with a resounding "F" for quality, "Farinelli, il castrato" is being shown at the San Francisco International Film Festival this weekend and then to be released commercially. Because of its subject, it will inevitably become one of those "much talked-about" movies, but the amputation here is of the brain, never mind other parts.
