(The State News) (U-WIRE) EAST LANSING, Mich. -- An investigation into the events that transpired in Waco, Texas six years ago is needed because of gross incompetence in the U.S. Justice Department.

John Danforth, a former Republican senator, was appointed special counsel Friday. His job is to investigate whether the FBI contributed to the fire that killed 57 adults and 19 children in the Branch Davidian compound in April 1993. Danforth has the power to charge government agents with crimes, compel testimony and documents and bring agents to a grand jury trial.
