The U.S. Senate defeated a proposal Wednesday night that could have forced
automakers to produce more fuel-efficient minivans and sport utility vehicles.
By a vote of 55-40, the Senate voted to prohibit the Clinton administration
from even studying whether fuel economy standards for cars and trucks should
be increased.
Environmentalists have urged Congress to support tougher fuel economy
standards, given the dramatic increase of minivans and SUVs on the nation's
roads in recent years.
