PORTLAND -- Minus the monumental set "Sunset Boulevard" used on Broadway, the touring version of this Andrew Lloyd Webber show relies on the cast, storyline and music to entertain audiences.
Yet with pop singer Petula Clark leading a weak ensemble of performers and Webber's languid music muddying an already lean tale, there is little to enjoy in this production other than the sparse scenery.
The story begins with police and reporters gathered around the pool at the Sunset Boulevard mansion of silent-film star Norma Desmond. There is a body in the pool, which turns out to be Joe Gillis, an aspiring scriptwriter who has become jaded ...
