KIGALI, May 22 (IPS) -- Zaire-based Hutu rebels have added a new
dimension to their attacks on Rwanda. In addition to raids on small
administrative centers, their campaign now includes attempts to
free genocide suspects from jails.
On the nights of May 18 and 19, prisons in two districts in the
southwestern province of Cyangugu were attacked, reportedly by
members of the Former Rwandan Army (FAR) and the "interahamwe,"
Hutu militias who participated in the mass murder of more than
500,000 Rwandans, mainly Tutsis, in April-July 1994.
