The on-again off-again conflict between America and Japan is more than a spat over trade; it is a clash of cultures.
The American culture is based on an anti-hierarchical ethos derived from the egalitarian individualism of the American Revolution and the subsequent influence of the frontier. The Japanese culture is based on a hierarchical ethos derived from a deeply entrenched feudalism that was legally interred in the 1860s but has actually continued to the present.
