I was watching television early last Sunday morning when a special announcement came on that Mickey Mantle, the former New York Yankee center-fielder, had lost his battle with cancer and was dead at the age of 63.
Mickey Mantle can be contrasted with the temperate Willie Mays. Both of them reached the big leagues in New York City at the same time, Mantle coming from Oklahoma and Mays from Alabama.
There were great expectations for both players, Mays with the New York Giants and Mantle with the alltime great Yankees. Mantle was 19 in 1951, and Mays only 18.
