Anybody with common sense, I ranted and railed to no one in particular, would know better than to cut Medicare without considering its impact on all of us - young, middle-aged, and old. It is tantamount, I shouted, to rewarding people who worked all their lives with a slap in the face. A Congress with common sense, I bellowed, would know better than to trash the social safety net.
