Sylvia's, Harlem institution, marks 33 years of food service.

Community institutions -- no matter what community -- are made, not born. So it is with Sylvia's, an institution and a landmark now celebrating 33 years of providing the best food at the best possible price in Harlem.

Mrs. Sylvia Woods, who came to New York from South Carolina in 1944, said, "The Silver Meteor brought me, but the cotton field runs me." After getting married and permanently moving to New York, Sylvia worked for Andrew James Johnson as a waitress. Johnson owned three restaurants in Harlem. Woods worked in the smallest one, at 338 Lenox Ave.
