Communist Basu Seeks U.S. Greenbacks.
The British-educated Jyoti Basu, the longest-surviving Communist chief minister, traveled to New York by Concorde, stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria and dined with capitalists. He was on a mission to drum up investment in West Bengal which has been slipping back as an industrial state since he took over in 1977.
Today he is a front-runner for foreign investments. He managed to attract project proposals worth $1.4 billion during his U.S. and European visits in a month.
