Sharpe working to unseat Street on City Council.
Independent candidate Melvin Sharpe Jr. launched his election campaign for the 5th District City Council seat, currently held by City Council President John Street, last Wednesday with a march and rally at JFK Plaza.
Sharpe, a lawyer and businessman from North Philadelphia, who's never run for political office before, said he purposely chose to run as an independent and wait until the Aug. 1 candidate filing deadline because he didn't want "the entire hierarchy of the political machine to be up against me and have the time for them to get themselves together."
