It has been a year since Sonia Gandhi took over the mantle of Congress Party president - a year in which the 52-year-old Italy-born widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has transformed both herself and the party she leads.

No longer do opposition politicians dub her "an ordinary housewife with little understanding of politics." After all, she has, in the space of one year, turned around the fortunes of the dissensionprone Congress Party, which had been floundering under the leadership of former president Sitaram Kesri. And resoundingly won Assembly elections in three states.
