With prices for a single fruit averaging from $45 to $100 - even $500 to $1,000 is not unheard of - the etrog must be, by weight or volume, one of the most precious edibles sold on the planet.

The etrog - also called a citron, or Citrus medica by the more scientifically precise - is a key element of Jewish observance for Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles.

The holiday begins Sunday at sundown.
