Maoris get largest land compensation deal ever for New Zealand.

(AP) -- Maoris sang and cheered Oct. 19 when Parliament unanimously approved the biggest ever compensation deal with indigenous tribes who lost vast tracts of territory to British colonizers 132 years ago.

Although the settlement is the largest of its kind, only a fraction of land confiscated last century will be handed back to Maoris in the Waikato region on the North Island.

However, in an unprecedented move, the government will also formally apologize for the seizure.
