A journey of cultural discovery: Visiting Suriname's Bush Negroes.
Most people do not know where Suriname is located. When I told my students that I was planning a class trip there, they told me that they were afraid to go to Africa, others argued with the students that believed Suriname was in Africa by shouting that it is located in Asia, near Papua New Guinea. The entire class was wrong.
Suriname, formerly known as Dutch Guiana, is located on the north shore of South America, among Guyana (British) to the west, French Guiana to the east and Brazil to the south. Almost 75 percent of this country's area can be described as unexplored. The flat ...
