NEW YORK -- Last Friday, the social and intellectual elite gathered at the Plaza Hotel for a lunch honoring Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, head of Britain's great banking family, who had flown in to receive the Hadrian Award for art patronage from the World Monuments Fund.

Jayne Wrightsman, Oscar de la Renta and David Rockefeller lauded Lord Rothschild's contributions to the world's artistic patrimony. A filmstrip featured the Supreme Court building in Jerusalem, a gift to Israel; an Albanian excavation he is underwriting; and several London mansions he helped restore.
