The Lesser of Two Evils: Eastern European Jewry Under Soviet Rule,. 1939-1941
The book under review is the culmination of 30 years of scholarship by a noted Israeli historian. Levin describes the life of 2 million Jews who found themselves caught between the Nazis and the Soviet Union after the signing of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact in August 1939. The treaty divided the regions of eastern Poland, the Baltics and eastern Romania between the former implacable foes and placed millions under Soviet control.
If one adds the more than 3 million Jews already living in the Soviet Union, then the total accounted for one-third of all Jews alive at the time. ...
