Unnecessary Fears.
The very thought that Terence Hallinan might be elected district attorney drove San Francisco's two daily papers into a frenzy of opposition that at times seemed ridiculous.
Hallinan, a defense lawyer in media-attracting cases where the defendants' civil rights were violated, was deemed to be too much of a social worker. Then the media attempted to paint him and his family as soft on communism. Some of the more extremist in the city held this belief because of the strenous defense that his father, Vincent Hallinan - one of the great criminal lawyers in the nation - put up for Harry Bridges.
