Students lose, banks win under GOP budget.

In the latest of disappointing disasters of the new majority in Congress, I regret to announce that 43 schools in Michigan will be forced out of the Direct Student Loan program under the Republican budget. Of the 47 schools in Michigan participating in the Direct Student Loan program this year, only four will be allowed to remain in the program next year.

The GOP plan to virtually eliminate the highly successful Direct Student Loan program is just one more example of the extreme nature of the Republican budget. Students as well as colleges and universities prefer direct ...
