Brown Sworn In As 41st Mayor Of San Francisco: Thousands Gather for. Inaugural; Police, Fire Chiefs Announced
An estimated 10,000-15,000 people gathered at Yerba Buena Gardens Jan. 8 to see Willie L. Brown Jr. sworn in as the 41st mayor of the City and County of San Francisco.
Mayor Brown was sworn in by Superior Court Judge John Dearman.
The grand-scale inaugural ceremony was highlighted by a phone call from President Clinton, remarks by outgoing Mayor Frank Jordan and a performance of "San Francisco" by a "thousand-voice" choir. Mayor Brown finished the program by taking the baton to conduct the San Francisco Youth Symphony.
