CLIFTON -- What if the city planned a downtown renaissance and no one showed
up?

City officials had hoped to lure high-profile stores or restaurants
to what is now a hodgepodge of struggling mom-and-pop businesses on the
west side of Main Avenue, between Clifton and Madison avenues.

But of the eight developers contacted by the city, none was willing
to make a significant investment in the area. As a result, the plan to
redevelop the stretch has been relegated to the back burner.
