QLD: Parasite helps cut chemical use

A South American fly introduced to help crop farmers reduce the use of chemical sprays
has been successfully established in Brisbane.

Project leader HUGH BRIER, from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, says
the parasite, Trichopoda giacomellii, attacks the green vegetable bug - a major pest of
many field and horticultural crops.

Mr BRIER says the parasite was released two years ago, at Kingaroy and Byee, but has
only recently established a permanent home in South Burnett.
