A FLURRY of diplomatic activity in Washington, Moscow, and Jerusalem, as well as pressure from US Jewish leaders, yesterday led to a US State Department statement expressing concern over the closure of certain Jewish Agency centers in Russia.

Meanwhile, Jewish Agency Chairman Avraham Burg arrived in New York for a 10-hour visit, during which he held intensive talks with some 15 Jewish leaders on strategies for dealing with the closure of the agency's offices in Birobidzhan and Piatrgorsk, regional headquarters for aliya from the Caucasus.
