Sir, - While I am disappointed that Likud leaders are presenting no clear vision of the future, Susan Hattis Rolef's third conclusion ("The Likud's kind of peace," May 1) is false. She states that halting Oslo (with its implied PLO mini-state) means freezing hopes of peace with the Arabs. She is firmly in the "there is no alternative" camp. But there is.

The notion that peace merely awaits agreement amongst political leaders is the root fallacy. Politics is about power. The political struggle can (and frequently does) destroy peace, but it never makes it. Peace is made by the shopkeepers and their customers. By the back door of unofficial ...
