WHEN the naturalist H.B. Tristram visited this area about 130 years ago he listed the hooded crow (Corvus cornix in Latin) as the commonest bird in Palestine. This was true up to the '50s and '60s when their numbers declined drastically due to their eating poisoned bait put out by the Agriculture Ministry to poison jackals. Now they have made a successful comeback and can be seen in all parts of the coastal plain, Galilee, the inland valleys, Judea and Samaria.
This bird, called orev afor (gray raven) in Hebrew, is very obvious wherever it is. They are large birds, up to 50cm. long with a wingspan of some 87cm., they have raucous voices and behave ...
