HARARE, Feb. 16 (IPS) -- A weary looking President Robert
Mugabe last night acknowledged defeat after 687,754 voters
rejected a draft constitution, strongly supported by the
government.
The draft constitution found its way into the garbage bin, in
part, for allowing the 75 year-old leader to run for office
again.
Zimbabwe's former colonial master and largest trading partner,
Britain, urged the government to take a lesson from the voting
outcome and make a fresh start.
A total of 578,210 people voted in favor of the draft
constitution to replace the unpopular Lancaster House
constitution worked out between nationalist fighters and former
