HONG KONG, Jun. 28 (IPS) -- For China as a whole and President
Jiang Zemin in particular, a trouble-free return of Hong Kong to
Chinese rule is key to realizing future goals.
This is because Beijing would want to promote the smooth
hand-over of the British colony as a model for reunification in the
light of the Chinese objective of also bringing Taiwan into its
fold.
And for Jiang, a smooth transition bears particular personal
political significance as well, say observers.
