(The Oracle) (U-WIRE) TAMPA, Fla. -- The monks of Drepung Loseling will begin Monday constructing an intricate Mandala Sand Painting in the Phyllis P. Marshall Center at the University of South Florida.
The mandala is a creation of geometric shapes and ancient spiritual symbols made with grains of colored sand. The shapes and symbols generally have secret meanings beyond what is visible. The word mandala means "world in harmony" and is used to aid in meditation.
The monks will work from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day until March 3, when the artwork is finished and then destroyed.
