WA: Deal to ensure privatisation of Westrail Freight

PERTH, March 22 AAP - The West Australian government and an independent upper house
MP today reached agreement to allow the privatisation of the freight arm of the state-owned
rail carrier Westrail.

Cabinet last year approved the sale of the business of Westrail Freight, including
rolling stock and customers, and also approved the lease for 49 years of the rail lines,
which cover about 5,000km.

It has been estimated the business would fetch more than $700 million.

But opposition by Labor-turned-independent MP for the Mining and Pastoral Region, Mark
Nevill, to aspects of the bill has held up ...
