U. Texas-Austin prof speaks on genocide of Native Americans

(Daily Texan) (U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas -- Native-American studies scholar Ward Churchill claimed that the U.S. government is guilty of genocide against Native Americans during a lecture at the University of Texas Saturday.

In a speech delivered to 400 attendees at Sid Richardson Hall, Churchill explained that the word "genocide" has been misunderstood, and that Native-American history contains examples of genocide.

"When I say it, people automatically conjure up images of the death camps at Auschwitz ... that is one form of genocide, but it is not a synonym for the term genocide," said Churchill, a professor of American-Indian studies at the University ...
