Fed: Suicide rate eases slightly but still close to record high

CANBERRA, March 29 AAP - Australians are taking their own lives at an increasingly
younger age, with the suicide rate for teenagers doubling since 1970.
Figures released today show the number of Australians taking their own lives fell slightly
in 1998 to 2,683, the first fall in five years, but it was still the second highest number
in history.
Taking into account population changes, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found
the suicide rate in 1998 was little different to 1921, when figures were first taken.
