Vic: New drug for Parkinson s sufferers

MELBOURNE, March 29 AAP - Up to 30 per cent of Australians suffering Parkinson's disease
could be given an improved quality of life thanks to a new drug now publicly available,
a neurologist said today.
The drug, Comtan, was best suited for people who had suffered from the disease for
five to 10 years and whose standard medication was no longer effective, Dr Andrew Hughes,
of the Austin Repatriation and Medical Centre in Melbourne said.
He estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 Parkinsons' sufferers in Australia - about 30
per cent - could benefit from the drug.
