Article: Peer educators, treatments tackle drinking at U. Maryland

(The Diamondback) (U-WIRE) COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Anna Makela, a senior biochemistry major, knows what it is like to live with the effects of alcohol. Now she is putting those experiences of her childhood to use by helping others as a peer-educator at the University of Maryland Health Center.

"I was watching it as I grew up, and it provoked me to take action," Makela said. "I want to help someone help someone they are close to."

Makela said she gave 10-13 presentations last semester. She said peer educators try to make the presentations interactive, fun and nonjudgmental.
