Fed: Money and intervention needed for indigenous people: ALP

CANBERRA, April 18 AAP - New figures showing Aborigines continue to die earlier than
other Australians pointed to a need for more funding and better prevention strategies,
Labor health spokeswoman Jenny Macklin said today.

Yesterday the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that more than half the indigenous
men who died between 1995-97 were under the age of 50.

Heart disease, injury, respiratory disease, cancer and diabetes were the main causes
of death for Aboriginal people.

Suicides were 70 per cent higher for Aboriginal men and 40 per cent higher for women
than for the rest of ...
