JAKARTA, Jul. 30 (IPS) -- Southeast Asian governments often
skirt around the sensitive subject of human rights, but if
campaigners have their way the topic should climb a notch higher
in the region's priorities.
Amid the flurry of diplomatic talks among Southeast Asian
governments here last week, officials of the region's human rights
commissions met foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN) to propose the creation of a "regional human
rights mechanism."
