Economy Grows at 5.4 Percent Rate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy, propelled by the biggest jump in consumer spending in nearly 17 years, grew at a 5.4 percent annual rate during the first three months of 2000, the government said today.

The increase in the gross domestic product -- the country's total output of goods and services -- as measured by the Commerce Department was weaker than the 6 percent rate many analysts were expecting.
