Padres Put Tony Gwynn On DL

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Tony Gwynn was put on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a sore left knee that's contributed to his unfathomable .186 batting average.

The San Diego Padres star, a lifetime .339 hitter, thinks the rest will help the inflammation settle down, but acknowledged that the knee might bother him all season.

Gwynn, who turns 40 on May 9, has had fluid drained from the knee at least five times since spring training, most recently on Thursday after playing on the artificial turf in Pittsburgh on Tuesday and Wednesday. The longest stretch he's been able to play was five straight starts on the last ...
