That black line at the end of the approach and the beginning of the
lane's playing surface is the foul line.
It's vitally important if you do any serious bowling because going
over the foul line on any shot negates the ball. In the early days of
bowling there were live foul judges perched on ladders or in the dugouts
in the walls from where the judge could see all the lanes and call
fouls.
With the advent of electric-eye foul detectors more than 50 years
ago, foul-calling has been almost automatic. ...
