Modified Seed Planted Accidentally

LONDON (AP) -- Genetically modified seed that was accidentally mixed with normal seed has been planted in Britain and Sweden, countries where the use of such strains is still under study, their governments say.

The findings have created a dilemma over whether such crops must be destroyed in keeping with stringent regulations over the planting of genetically altered plants.

The mixed seed, produced in Canada in 1998, contained about 1 percent genetically modified material, the British Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food said Thursday.
