BRUSSELS, Oct. 3 (IPS) -- The European Union (EU) has introduced
a formal complaint against Indonesia's "national car" program with
the Geneva-based World Trade Organization (WTO).
It accuses Jakarta of breaking international trade rules by
granting preferential tariff treatment to cars being developed by
Timor Putra Nasional, a company owned by President Suharto's
youngest son.
International trade experts say that both Japan and the United
States, who have also voiced concerns about the Indonesian car
program, will also soon ask for the WTO action against Indonesia.
