SUSAN STAMBERG, Host: From National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.,
this is Weekend Edition. I'm Susan Stamberg. This week, the strength
and unpredictability of nature were underscored on two continents
- floods in the American Middle West and in Japan, the deadliest earthquake
in nearly half a century. Some 150 people died, at least 117 are
missing the quake on Monday off Hokkaido measured 7.8 on the Richter
scale. It caused giant seismic tidal waves, 100 feet high in one
case, and there were aftershocks that rocked northern Japan for the
rest of the week. Japan is the world's most earthquake-prone nation.
