Thomas `Tip' O'Neill, who served in the House of Representatives from 1953 to 1987. When the former speaker stepped down, his words of farewell touched the nation.

TIP O'NEILL: I'll always be a man of the House of Representatives. But always first, I'm an American and so proud of this party. Thank you. I love you all.
