On this day in 1916 Irish Nationalists launched the Easter Rising against the British by reading a proclamation of the Irish Republic at the main post office in Dublin. After a week of fighting, the rising was crushed, but the seeds of rebellion were sown, and William Butler Yeats was inspired to write, `Now, and in time to be, wherever green is worn, our change - changed utterly - a terrible beauty is born.'
