SCOTT SIMON, Host: The late sportswriter Wendell Smith will be honored
during the induction ceremony at baseball's Hall of fame tomorrow.
A long time reporter, both in Pittsburgh and Chicago, Wendell Smith
was the first African-American admitted into the Baseball Writers
Association, and he made the integration of baseball a personal crusade.
He arranged a tryout for three stars of the old Negro leagues, and
one of those players, Jackie Robinson, caught on with the Brooklyn
Dodgers. And at the request of owner Branch Rickey, Wendell Smith
roomed with Jackie Robinson during much of his first tumultuous major
